Cafe Mungo

At Mungo, expression is restrained. The design foregrounds tactility, proportion and light — allowing the rituals of coffee and conversation to define the experience.

Mungo explores spatial layering and sensory restraint within the dense commercial fabric of Bangalore’s CBD. The project was approached as a departure from trend-driven café interiors, instead emphasizing structure, surface articulation and atmospheric quality. The space leans into earth, texture and light — crafting an atmosphere that feels composed rather than curated.

The planning divides the footprint into two distinct yet visually connected food brands. One operates as a relaxed café serving coffee and meals, while the other caters to quicker lunch bites. The transition between these two zones is articulated through a glass block wall — a deliberate choice that balances separation with permeability. The wall reads almost transparent, yet offers a tactile translucency that filters light and softens views, subtly binding the two spaces together.

A curved in-situ concrete bench traces this partition on both sides, integrating pockets of planting that temper the robustness of the built surfaces. A subtle arched opening in the brick wall further reinforces this interplay of separation and connection, offering framed glimpses across zones.

The interiors are wrapped with a cohesive palette of earth toned finishes. Seamless textured walls in, muted and grounded, neutral shades envelop the space, while exposed structural ceilings retain their raw character. These honest surfaces — now somewhat intrinsic to our practice — ground the café in warmth without excess.

Overhead, circular cork installations introduce rhythm against the raw ceiling slab. Beyond their sculptural presence, they enhance acoustics, ensuring that the café’s openness does not compromise intimacy. This circular motif extends outdoors through custom light fittings, carrying a quiet continuity across thresholds.

Mungo ultimately finds its character not in ornament, but in balance — between solidity and softness, translucency and enclosure, texture and calm. The space is conceived to feel composed yet inviting, allowing the experience of coffee, food, and conversation to remain at the forefront.
